13 Day Cape York Advanced Camping Safari

The Cape York "Advanced" Safari is a 13 day drive / fly camping safari which focuses on the nature of Cape York’s wilderness, a region of international conservation significance and perhaps Australia’s next World Heritage listed region. Designed for Nature-lovers, Bird-watchers and Adventurers this safari travels "off-the-beaten-track" to see-the-rarely-seen.

Highlights

Trip Map

  • A focus on the flora and fauna of Cape York’s wilderness, intentionally omitting the usual Cape York tourist urban icons.
  • Travel “off the beaten track” to “see the rarely seen”, visit remote areas, enjoy new experiences and have fun.
  • Two-night camps allow quality time in feature-rich areas while the location of one-night camps allow a relaxed start to each new day. Two accommodated nights provide mid-safari respite and time to relax and celebrate on our last night together.
  • Two senior guides travel on this safari to enhance personal interaction and add an extra measure of safety in the remote areas this safari visits.
  • The itinerary description is intentionally vague so as to protect the proprietary nature of the itinerary.
  • A maximum of ten passengers.

Itinerary

Day 1 - (LD) Your adventure begins departing Cairns and driving alongside deserted beaches, imposing coastal ranges and lush fields of sugarcane. We now head west via the Rex Range where spectacular views can be seen from the edge of the escarpment across the Mossman Valley and the Daintree Delta to rainforest clad Thornton Peak. Later we travel through productive cattle, sugar and orchard country to our destination. Kingfisher Park is located in the rural community of Julatten. It is named after the Buff-breasted Paradise-Kingfisher that visits here to breed within the grounds late October through to mid-April. Within 1½ km of the lodge over 200 bird species have been recorded as well as many mammals, reptiles, insects, butterflies and plants. We camp here overnight.

Day 2 - (BLD) An energising early morning bird chorus before breaking camp and continuing west then north on the Peninsula Development Road into an outback landscape of termite mounds and cattle stations. Visit Split Rock where we’ll climb the sandstone escarpment (suitable footwear and reasonable fitness required) to view ancient “Quinkan” Aboriginal rock art depicting life and customs here thousands of years ago. Travel on into Lakefield National Park, Queensland’s second largest at 537,000 hectares (1.25 million acres) and a great wildlife spotting opportunity. We camp in the National Park tonight.

Day 3 - (BL) Waterlily covered billabongs, wildlife and a great variety of birdlife in Lakefield National Park this morning. We’ll head off to seek and record wildlife and birdlife in the surrounding wetland, savannah, woodland, open-forest and riparian habitats, the big prize being Red Goshawk, a rare and vulnerable species and Star Finch. Rejoin the main road and continue into Golden-shouldered Parrot country where we stop to try to find this rare and endangered bird. Musgrave Roadhouse tonight. Dinner is at your own expense this evening.

Day 4 (BD) Transit to Iron Range National Park passing Coen and Archer River along the way. A two night camp at a location which gives us the best chance to find the wildlife treasures of the Iron Range: Eclectus Parrot, Green Python and Spotted Cuscus, among others.

Day 5 (BLD) A whole day to continue our quest and to visit Portland Roads and Chili Beach. Maybe add Palm Cockatoo, Magnificent Riflebird, Trumpet Manucode, Wompoo Fruit-dove and the delightful White-faced Robin to our list today along with the elusive Yellow-billed Kingfisher and Marbled Frogmouth.

Day 6 (BD) Revisit Archer River this morning to re-supply, in preparation to venture into more remote areas, then travel north to Moreton on the Wenlock River. A break from setting up camp tonight because we’ll use Moreton’s permanent- tent safari camp facilities.

Day 7 (BLD) 4WD adventure this morning as we travel the historic Telegraph Track north to our secluded wilderness camp for two nights.

Day 8 (BLD) Walk, swim, fish, birdwatch or relax along the banks of this beautiful, remote wild-river. An opportunity to try our luck fishing for Sooty Grunter, Barramundi and Saratoga today and a chance for White-streaked Honeyeater.

Day 9 (BLD) Continue north on the Telegraph Track stopping off at secluded hideaways along the way to explore and ponder our peaceful isolation. Camp and relax beside another crystal clear, spring-fed creek.

Day 10 (BLD) Saltwater today as we travel west to the Gulf of Carpentaria. Stroll along the beach, search for crocodile tracks and try your luck fishing before a sunset to remember. A beachfront camp tonight.

Day 11 (BLD) Across the Peninsula to the Coral Sea crossing the Jardine River en-route. Today’s track will recall the tragic journey of Edmund Kennedy and Jackey Jackey. Maybe sight Rose-crowned and Superb Fruit-Doves today. Northern Scrub-robin would be an exciting find. Tonight we camp near the east coast.

Day 12 (BL) Images of 'Robinson Crusoe' as we take a carefree stroll to comb the fascinating flotsam and jetsam washed ashore by the south-east trade winds. North to walk to the very Top of Australia - Cape York! Civilisation now where an air-conditioned room, hot shower and clean sheets will be welcomed. Celebrate on our last tonight together beside the tropical shore of Torres Strait.

Day 13 (B) A relaxed morning to reminisce before boarding your flight to fly over the Great Barrier Reef to Cairns ending your unforgettable adventures in Cape York’s wilderness.
